Summer Opportunities!!!

Good evening Port Washington volleyball parent and athletes,

(IMMEDIATE MEMO FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T RECEIVED THE PORT ATHLETICS EMAIL, OPEN GYMS HAVE MOVED UP TO 630-830PM ON WEDNESDAYS, PLEASE GO ON TO THE PORT HS VOLLEYBALL WEBSITE AND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE SIGN UP TO GET ALERTS)

On behalf of the Port Washington High School volleyball coaching staff and myself, I would like to welcome you to the start of an amazing year of change and successes!  The 2019 season is right around the corner and as I look back on where we’ve been and where I believe we deserve to be. I am wanting to send you this email to share some thoughts. It is true, there has been significant turnover in coaching staff here at Port High and that is probably part of what we can look at to work on first. Be assured we have a plan in motion already taking that into consideration. We are setting up youth development programs, team building camps, and events that build school pride around the program while also setting up a team of parents, athletic directors, and community partners that will help add stability to the program no matter who steps in next or how often the role of the head coach may switch hands in the future.

The next part of growing a solid program would include creating a culture that will bring positive change. The coaching staff and I are in support of creating a culture in the volleyball program of commitment, dedication, hard work, and discipline. We could go on and on about these character traits and the many benefits that will come from having them. Some athletes already shine in some of these areas, some could and have a desire to grow stronger in some of the areas and some are trying to figure it all out. It’s high school and we’ve all been there. We are here to help them continue to build their character and help support what you as the parents already started.

We also understand the importance of being clear with the standards the athletes will be held to. I know we started to touch on that at our first meeting. This will be vital to the success of this program. This includes but isn't limited to being in attendance at contact days, fundraising and team bonding events, tryouts, practices and games; coming into practice with a "give it my all" attitude, respecting coaches and other athletes, and putting the work in both in and out of season to grow your skills as both a teammate and as an athlete. This year our motto is "There's you, there's us, and there's the team” you referring to opponents or opposing schools, us being the volleyball program, and the team, being the team you work to be a part of. The focus here is to protect ourselves from any negative outside influences, whether that be opposing teams, drama at school or the range of things in between. Our goal will be to start growing from the inside out as an individual and as a member of the volleyball team. Throughout all the teams this season and moving forward we will continue working on building coach-athlete trust, trust between teammates and building team comradery. We will also work on having positive attitudes on and off the court and realizing the payoff of dedication to something bigger than ourselves.

Come try out time, we will be building the team and program around individuals who have put in the time and effort to better themselves for the betterment of the team and those of whom display commitment, hard work, and positive leadership in any of its various forms. We can train a team to win and we can build a successful program that will last generations. Now we need coachable athletes and willing parents to put in the time, effort and humility into that vision so that we can reach a shared goal!

With all that being said, we would like to make you aware of a plethora of different opportunities out there this summer to continue skill building and preparing for the 2019 season. Although participation in these programs/training are not required, we do highly encourage any extra practice this summer and know it will help in preparation for our tryouts on August 19th-21st.

First off, did you all know that we have a brand new training facility at Port ?!?!? They offer a wide variety of strength and conditioning/speed and agility summer classes, please check them out here! https://pws.cr3.rschooltoday.com/public/home

Here is a link to all the summer volleyball camps in the Badger Region: http://badgervolleyball.org/summer-volleyball-camps/

Finally, some things that are required include our two summer fundraisers, (July 27th in the old gym, and August 3rd at the car wash near Culvers (specific time slots by grade are tbd)), and Contact Days (we are looking at long Fridays and Monday nights the last three weeks in July for contact days).

Last note, Labor day is Monday, September 2nd; we will have off both Friday, August 31st, and Monday, September 2nd as I know that family time is hard to find so please take a break from the summer hassle and spend some time together before the school year gets rolling.

Please stay tuned for more details on contact days/times, tryouts, and season practice times as we are finalizing all of those schedules this week.

Thanks in advance for your time and cooperation,

Coach Mikala and staff, Coach Jamie, Taylor, and Worm

Open gym cleanliness and basic expectations

Good afternoon,

I apologize for all the message blasts today, but here is the last one I promise (at least for today). It was brought to my attention that prior to an open gym the other week there was a group of 4-5 girls that had walked into open gym were sitting in the carpeted upper deck eating subway and left all of their trash on the table for the custodians to clean up. This is completely unacceptable! Three points.

1) You are not only representing yourself but the entire volleyball program.

2) The Custodians do so much for us and the school as it is they shouldn't have to clean up after you.

3) You are High Schoolers, I hope you don't expect your parents to clean up after you like that. If I or any of the coaches ever have to that will be laps run at practice.

In general food and drinks are not allowed on the carpeted areas. If I am informed of this happening again we will be taking part of the open gym to help the custodians clean up the school. If this was you, I hope you have the humility to take responsibility and apologize to the custodians for your actions, see if there is anything you can DO to apologize (help them with a task) and make it clear that it will never happen again.

Mandatory District Wide Volleyball Pre-Season Meeting May 29th!!!!

Good Morning Volleyball Parents and Athletes,

It is getting close to that time of year again! To make sure we are setting the summer expectations early and setting ourselves up for a successful season (and future program) we are having a district-wide volleyball meeting Wednesday, May 29th from 5:45-7pm at Port Washington High School Library. This is a mandatory meeting for all high school and incoming high school parents and athletes and is highly encouraged for all elementary and middle school athletes interested in the sport. (That includes both Male and Female athletes that are interested)

At the meeting we will be going over summer expectations and opportunities (including a mini volleyball fair with a lot of the local colleges and clubs that have summer opportunities for athletes of all ages.), changes coming to our program, next years schedule, and program fundraising. This is also a great opportunity to start building rapport with coaches.

We will be sending this out to the middle and elementary schools, but we ask that you also share the information with friends, families, colleagues, other athletes, etc so we can get as large of turn out as possible.

I am looking forward to seeing you all there and am excited to see what this season has in store.
